RED CROSS LAUNCHES APPEAL
The city of Christchurch was struck by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on February 22, causing widespread devastation and loss of life. Red Cross is there providing essential support and humanitarian assistance where needed.
What red cross is doing?
Red Cross has trained staff and volunteers from all over New Zealand currently working in Christchurch to support the relief efforts.
- Red Cross teams are going door-to-door, visiting people to check on welfare and assist the needs of affected people and communities
- Red Cross has six water stations, providing fresh water for those in need
- More than 20,000 people have registered with the Red Cross, helping to restore links between missing friends and family. Read more about Red Cross Restoring Family Links
Red cross christchurch earthquake emergency grants
An independent commission has been established to disburse emergency grants from the New Zealand Red Cross 2011 Earthquake Appeal to those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

All funds will be used towards the New Zealand Red Cross response to the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake to assist people and communities affected. Funds will NOT be used for Red Cross administration costs, staff salaries or be sent overseas to support other disasters or the work of New Zealand Red Cross. Money will be used in a range of ways including the provision of goods, cash grants and other support.

As at Thursday 17th March:
- 6 x 5000 litre bladders and tap stands are operating at 3 static points across Christchurch and are being actively managed by Red Cross.
- 254,650 litres of water has been distributed along with over 3,200 water containers.
- Mobile truck continues to distribute waste in eastern suburbs to house bound residents.
- Hygiene messaging in multiple languages and hand sanitizers continue to be distributed at water points.
Red Cross water stations are operating at:
- Pages Road - Marae site (moved from Cowles stadium)
- New Brighton - Hawke/Shaw
- Avondale Golf Course
- One mobile water unit
NB: Water will be available approximately 8am-6pm. Please take clean water containers if possible. The water available is chlorinated, but Red Cross strongly advises to boil water first.
CBD cordon: The inner cordon to the CBD red zone was opened to residents and business owners on 6/3/2011.

WARNING: beware of fundraising scams
We have learnt of reports of a scam email circulating, supposedly from the Red Cross, which directs people to a fake phishing website where you are asked for credit card details. There could be a number of these fake emails and fake websites surfacing in coming days. The scam website has the same look and feel as the genuine Red Cross website.
